More Cruise Ships Returning to Service, With Health Protocols in Place, While Other Cruise Lines Make Future Plans

The cruise industry executives were in a discussion days’ ago with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence to talk about cruise restart in the USA yet this year. Next the industry will present to the USA coronavirus task force an industry proposal about resuming operations in the USA.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) “no sail” order has been extended to Nov. 30, 2020, which pushes out the voluntary cruise industry pause that was to end Nov. 1, 2020. Some lines have successfully resumed sailings in Europe with health protocols similar to those being suggested by CLIA and the Health Sail Panel in place. In September CLIA (trade group representing 95% of world’s oceangoing passenger ships) unveiled a list of mandatory health and safety changes designed to make it safe to sail during the COVID-19 pandemic. CLIA’s mandatory “Core Elements of Health Protocols” includes crew and passenger testing, mask wearing, enhanced cruise ship ventilation, stringent response procedures and shore excursion protocols.
